What exactly is uterine fibroid embolization?
Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to treat uterine fibroids and help restore menopausal patients’ reproductive health. During a UAE, your doctor will insert an angiocatheter, or tube, into an artery in your groin or wrist. They will then inject embolic material, such as polyvinyl alcohol particles or microbubbles coated with iron and other compounds, into your uterine arteries to block blood flow to the tumor.

What can I expect from the procedure?
The procedure is done in our office with local anesthesia. A catheter (small, flexible tube) will be placed into your leg or arm vein to access your uterus.
Is there anything I need to do after the procedure
Following your uterine artery embolization, you may experience cramping or mild pain. This is a normal part of your recovery process. You should refrain from strenuous physical activity and sexual intercourse until advised by your physician to do so. Your physician will discuss post-procedure care with you prior to leaving the surgery. If you notice any of the following, please contact our office immediately: fever, severe abdominal or back pain (particularly when not relieved by NSAIDs), or bleeding that lasts longer than two hours.
Are there risks associated with uterine artery embolization
Uterine artery embolization is a low-risk procedure. The risks associated with UFE are similar to those associated with other procedures performed by an interventional radiologist, such as angiography. These include the risk of minor bleeding, bruising, and/or pain at injection site; and in rare cases, potentially dangerous complications may occur which include stroke, heart attack, or death.
